List #18

Well isn't this cool? List #18 is coming out on December 18. I just noticed that...neat! Anyway...moving right along...

In honor of the beautiful snow that continues to fall in my little neck of the woods, I thought that today's "Friday List" could be about that flaky white stuff. Growing up in the mountains of Western NC and living there again today, I have many fond snow memories. My memories of winter wonderlands extend beyond the borders of NC, as well. You can fairly say that I've seen quite a bit of the stuff in my lifetime. I have so many snowy memories, so today I'm sharing a list of ten of them. How about you? Have you had the privilege of making snow memories? I'd love to hear them!

As of this morning, this is what we've been blessed with. Lots more is on the way!

Now for the list!

Ten memories of snow:

1. When I was a child, school wasn't cancelled for snow very often. It had to be a big snowfall for that to happen. (I guess people weren't as law suit happy back then.) I remember my mother driving us to school one morning, and the car slid all over the place. As children, we thought it was fun to slip and slide along the snowy roads. I know better now.
2. I actually experienced my biggest snowfall in recent years while living in Charlotte, NC (not the snowy NC mountains). It was in the winter of 2003-2004, and we received around 18 inches of snow in our part of the city. Very rare for that part of the state. I was at work that morning, and they let us go home early on account of the weather. It took me 3 hours to drive a mile and a half!
3. I remember my parents making us snow cream for yummy sweet treats!
4. We were visiting relatives in Nebraska one Christmas season right after they had a huge blizzard. To date, this was the most snow I had seen in any one place at one time.
5. During the same Nebraska trip, I walked with my parents to the lake behind our relatives house. People were ice skating on it! I thought that was so cool, because in NC, the lakes rarely froze solid enough to be safe to skate on.
6. Another Nebraska memory...because the land was so flat, sleds were not as popular as they are in the NC mountains. However, snowmobiles were everywhere - such fun!
7. One last Nebraska story (I promise)...my mother was walking around in the snow in the back of the house and fell into a 4+ foot snow drift. First, let me say - she wasn't hurt - just embarrassed. Anyway, when we saw her - we laughed so hard we cried (including my dad). All you could see of my mother was her from the neck up. She just looked so funny, and she was not very happy that we were standing there laughing. But...we did help her get out!
8. My daughter has a January birthday. Needless to say, it snows sometimes in January where we live. We were celebrating her 3rd birthday with family that had driven in from out of town. It started snowing blankets, and everybody got snowed in with us in our little house. The snow was pretty...but guests got cranky being all squished up after awhile. We can laugh about it now.
9. I have many, many sledding memories during childhood. Thankfully - no bones were ever broken.
10. This snow memory requires a little explanation first, so bear with me. Our closest friends tragically lost their 8-yr-old son in 1993. For years, they would always stay home on Christmas, because they needed to just be together on that day especially and preferred to do so in the privacy of their home. However, they decided by the Christmas of 1998 that it would be okay for them to leave home for the first time. They came to spend Christmas with us, but they were still unsettled about leaving home. They prayed that God would send them a Christmas snow to assure them they were making the right decision and that everything would be okay. As we awoke that Christmas morning, snow flurries were falling from the sky. It wasn't a big snowfall by any stretch, but it was enough!

List #17

I was reminiscing today over some memorable Christmas gifts I received as a child or teenager. Some presents I was given really stand out for some reason or another, and I remember them vividly. How about you? What gifts did you receive as a child that you still remember with fondness today? Here are 10 of mine:

1. An "adoptable doll" - precursor to the Cabbage Patch dolls - that my aunt made for me! It looked just like me!

2. A box of cheese. I was a big time cheese lover, and one year I asked for cheese for Christmas. I think I was around 12 years old. There was a wrapped gift waiting for me in the refrigerator. Lots and lots of cheese. I ate so much that I didn't crave cheese for quite awhile after that.

3. A burgundy outfit. I had a dream in which I was a wearing the cutest burgundy outfit, so I tried to describe it to my parents when asking for it for Christmas. I got a burgundy outfit, but it didn't look as pretty on me in real life as it did in my dream.

4. My first 10-speed bike.

5. My first pair of real Nike tennis shoes. We weren't the wealthiest family on the block growing up, so having Nike tennis shoes was a big deal! Funny thing now - I don't like Nike shoes at all. They don't fit my feet properly anymore.

6. A crocheted "Miss Piggy" that my aunt made for me (the same one that made the adoptable doll).

7. A wooden Georgia Bulldogs plaque that my brother made for me in his shop class in school. For some reason, I was a Bulldogs fan back then - have no clue why. I am a Tarheel through and through now.

8. My first "boombox".

9. A set of Nancy Drew books. I loved reading then and still do now!

10. A Madame Alexander doll of "Jo" from Little Women.

List #16

Years ago, I attended an event sponsored by Proverbs 31 Ministries. It was held in November with the intention of teaching women tangible ways of celebrating Christmas to keep the focus and center on Christ. Many of the ideas were shared from a book written by Sharon Jaynes, entitled Celebrating a Christ-Centered Christmas. You can find this book reasonably priced at Amazon, and I assure you that it has many wonderful ideas! In honor of Friday List Day, I thought I would share ten of them with you now:

Ten Ways to Celebrate Christmas and Keep Christ at the Center:
1. Host a birthday party for Jesus. Send out invitations, decorate, have attendees make a craft as a take-home gift, etc.
2. Offer to Christmas shop for a disabled person.
3. Participate in Operation Christmas Child by packing a shoebox for a needy child overseas.
4. Work in a soup kitchen.
5. Sort toys for the Salvation Army.
6. Pray for those who send you Christmas cards.
7. Deliver Christmas cookies to the volunteer fire department.
8. Give to the Salvation Army kettle.
9. Put a reminder of Jesus in every room of your house.
10. Read Luke 2 by candlelight before going to bed on Christmas Eve.

List #15

Happy Friday folks! It's time for another of my favorite past-times - list making! In honor of this Thanksgiving week, I thought I would share some of my favorite Thanksgiving traditions - past and present. How about you? I'd love to hear some of yours. I love this holiday season!

Favorite Thanksgiving Traditions – Past and Present:

1. Pickled Eggs – it was the one time of the year we could expect my grandmother’s “famous” pickled eggs. When she stopped preparing a Thanksgiving meal – I tried to continue the tradition, but I’m pretty scattered with it and have missed a few years (including this one). They take a little while to prepare, so it can’t be done last minute – my favorite time to do most things!
2. Yummy casseroles – why is it that we tend to wait to make and eat some casseroles only at holiday time? Whatever the reason – I DO love green bean casserole, sweet potato soufflé, pineapple bake, corn casserole, and whatever else finds its way to the table.
3. The Macy’s Thanksgiving Day Parade – no Thanksgiving is complete without the noise of the Macy’s Parade in the background. While I seldom get to watch the parade in great detail, I love listening to it while cooking.
4. Football – no explanation necessary – football is…well…simply football! LOVE IT!!!!!
5. Being with great friends – we’ve spent the last several years celebrating Thanksgiving with dear friends of ours (they might as well be family), and we tend to laugh and cut up constantly when we’re together!
6. The desserts – again, another one needing no further explanation. Pies, cakes, candies, more pies, cake and candies! Yum!!!!!
7. Going to get a newspaper early in the morning for the sheer purpose of reading the ads. We usually spend time scouring the ads after the big meal and make a game plan for the day after Thanksgiving shopping spree we also undertake.
8. Shopping on Black Friday - As much as it wears me out...I love me a good bargain!
9. The Turkey - the smell and taste of it. While we eat turkey at other times of the year, there's nothing like the smell of a turkey baking on Thanksgiving Day!
10. Watching the men come in with a deer or two after a morning in the woods. This happened last year...can 2009 by a two-peat?

List #14

Happy Friday everyone! I'm so thankful the weekend is here. This week seemed long to me...how about you? Anyway...Friday brings another one of my lists. I noticed that not too long ago, I blogged a list of fun memories. Well, I'm doing that again today, but I've gone even further back in the memory bank for these. My ten fun memories this year are from my childhood days. Writing each one down brought a smile to my face as I relived the moment. Those days were anything but normal - quite dysfunctional actually. But, there were still the "good times", and those are the times that I like and choose to focus on. How about you? Anything from childhood that brings a smile to your face even today? I'd love to hear about it! Be blessed today friends!

Fun childhood memories:
1. Going to watch the Star Wars premier at the drive-in with my family and our neighbors in the back of a station wagon. Popcorn was everywhere!!!
2. Getting ice cream some days after school at “Dori’s Dario” with my dad and siblings.
3. Driving to my grandparent’s house in Kansas and trying to find a license plate tag representing all 50 states (never did see Hawaii).
4. Studying dinosaurs in Kindergarten. To this day, that is the only thing I remember learning in Kindergarten.
5. Attending my first concert with an attorney my mom worked for and his daughters - the GoGo’s. Does anyone even remember them? (Belinda Carlisle was the lead singer.)
6. Going to Disneyworld!!!!
7. Riding a ride with my dad at Worlds of Fun in Kansas that didn’t quite “work out” for him. Long story to this one, but trust me - it is definitely a fun memory!!! Hillarious actually!!! Maybe I’ll share more sometime!!! I’m actually cracking up again thinking about it. Anyway…moving right along…
8. Waking up to mom’s homemade biscuits on an occasional Saturday morning. She claimed it was the original Hardee’s biscuit recipe. Who knows? But…they were delish!
9. Participating in the District Spelling Bee in 4th grade but losing because I couldn’t spell lieutenant. I’ll never forget how to spell it now!
10. Pushing my infant sister around in my doll carriage - until I got caught, that is.

List #13

Some of you know that I've been making some pretty big changes in the way I eat, exercise, and just overall take care of myself. I've been battling my weight for quite awhile, and the battle wages on, but the victory is around the corner! However, in studying up on nutrition, in general, I've really begun a quest to try and get myself healthier. In other words, it's not just about the weight loss anymore. Even if I were already a skinny-mini, I would still employ many of these same things, because they simply make me a healthier woman. People often ask me what kind of diet I'm on, or what am I doing to lose weight. My "diet" or new healthy way of eating is a mix of different things. I've done so much research and have been on almost every diet imaginable that it's really a blend of many programs and much study. I also have polycystic ovarian syndrome (PCOS), which confounds problems by creating a pattern of insulin resistance in my body. I say all that to say - carbs are NOT my friends right now. So, for this week's Friday list, I thought I would share ten things that I'm doing along this healthy life journey that I'm on. I'd love new ideas from you if you have any you'd like to pass along. Or - maybe you have a success story to share. Feel free to comment or email me (see my profile page)...I'd love to hear from you!

10 New Things I am Doing to Incorporate a Healthier Lifestyle:
1. Lowering my carb intake to no more than 60-80 mg a day.
2. Eating almonds, blueberries, flaxseed oil, and olive oil daily - all very high in antioxidants and regulating insulin levels (no I’m not diabetic but struggle with insulin resistance)!
3. Paring protein and carbs together. I don’t just eat empty carbs - I put protein with it.
4. Eating 3 smaller meals and 2-3 healthy snacks daily.
5. Eating NO refined sugar - only natural sugars.
6. Using Stevia as a healthy, natural sweetener rather than Splenda, Sweet ‘n Low, and Equal.
7. Taking a multi-vitamin each day.
8. Avoiding potatoes, rice, crackers, bread, and other heavy starches.
9. Getting more sleep.
10. Getting exercise. This is actually limited right now due to a foot and ankle injury, but I’ll be up and at it again very soon!

List #11

Happy Friday blog friends!

Before I proceed to lay out this week's Friday List, I just need to apologize for my lack of posting lately. I am simply doing a lot of discernment these days about various things, and I can't seem to keep my creative juices in check to keep up with my blog. So...thanks for bearing with me a little longer while I flush out all of the various thoughts that continue to surface in my mind. I'll be focused again soon - I pray!

Speaking of praying, I have been very burdened lately to go before my Father's throne on my knees on behalf of many people. Some of these dear ones are complete strangers to me, but their prayer needs have become very real, and it seems the more faithful I am to pray - the more needs the Father directs me too. Many of you know that prayer is one of my passions. Now, I know a lot of people pray, but I truly have a passion and a burden to intercede on behalf of others like I've never known in my whole life. I consider it a privilege to pray, and I do so often. Sometimes, however, my sweet Father enables me to feel the heaviness of the burdens that people are experiencing a little more deeply than at other times. I find myself weeping over the trials that others are enduring, and I often ask God - how can I simply devote enough time to the needs that he places before me? I often feel that I could devote days and days to praying and do absolutely nothing else and still barely scratch the surface. Have you ever felt that way?

So, this week...I'm sharing a list of prayer needs. I welcome you joining me in lifting up these needs to the One capable of meeting each and every single one of them.

Prayer Requests:
1. Please pray for 5-year-old Kate - suffering with a brain tumor.
2. Please pray for 12-year-old Andrew - also suffering with a brain tumor.
3. Please pray for a friend in the middle of a collapsing marriage.
4. Please pray for a friend seeking God's wisdom and direction concerning His purpose for her.
5. Please pray for a woman broken over infertility issues.
6. Please pray for a friend working to overcome a food addiction.
7. Please pray for a family desperately needing their house to sell.
8. Please pray for two families in the middle of stagnant international adoptions.
9. Please pray for the family and friends of Kim, who just went home to be with Jesus a few short weeks ago - pray especially for her husband and three small children.
10. Please pray for a family needing a financial miracle.

"Be joyful always; pray continually; give thanks in all circumstances, for this is God's will for you in Christ Jesus." 1 Thessalonians 5:16-18

List #10

Happy Friday friends! With Friday, comes another opportunity for me to create a list for the blog. While I may only publish one in this setting, I'm sure I will have several running lists before the day is over.

So, what do you want to be when you grow up? Seriously! How many of you are doing the very thing you dreamed of when you were younger? How many of you are still trying to figure that out? I kind of fall in that department. As a young girl, teenager, and young adult, many career dreams developed within me. I struggled to simply choose one - like the world tends to tell us we need to do. I have so many passions, loves, hobbies, and goals - how in the world can I just have one vocation? So, now as I inch closer and closer to the age of 40, I continue to ask the question but with a slightly different twist: "God, what do YOU want me to be when I grow up?" My sweet, loving Heavenly Father has a specific plan and purpose for me. Being His ambassador, His servant, and His daughter is what I most desire to be when I grow up!

However, I still love to reflect on those dreams from yesteryear. Believe it or not, it was easy for me to reflect on 10 things I wanted to be when I grow up (there were probably a few more), but these are the 10 I remember best (in no particular order). And...you know what else? None of these career areas are where my current occupation resides.

Ten things I wanted to be “when I grow up”:
1. Teacher
2. Pediatrician
3. Nurse
4. Lawyer
5. Navy aviator
6. Writer
7. Accountant
8. Stay-at-home-mom
9. Interpreter
10. Marine biologist

List #9

It's Friday!!! Woohoo!!! You know what that means? Time for another list! I apologize for not posting one last Friday, but if you've read my previous post, you'll have an inkling as to why I had to simply let that one go.

Anyway, for this week - I'm doing something a little different. My plan was to do a list of 10 fears. But, you know what? I couldn't think of 10 fears! Praise God! So, I went with the 6 I could think of and then listed 4 very specific things that I'm not afraid of. Obviously, there are many other things that I'm not afraid of, but these are generally things that might pop up on other's "I'm afraid of..." lists. So, I just wanted to highlight that they aren't on mine (for what it's worth). Moving right along to the list...

Things I’m afraid of…
1. Mice
2. Something happening to my husband and daughter
3. Failure
4. Never living out God’s intended purpose for me
5. Cancer (not death by cancer - just the pain of cancer)
6. Wasting my life

Specific things I’m not afraid of…
1. Death
2. Being alone - don’t like it, but I can do it, because I’m never alone with Jesus
3. Spiders
4. Public speaking - I have a healthy nervousness about it but no fear.

I wanted to point out that I'm actually trying to work on my fears, in general. I know the Bible says that there is no fear in love and knowing that God is the God of love simply shows me that I'm not fully understanding the depth of that love to allow fear into my life. But, I also know that I'm an imperfect human, dealing with very real issues and very real struggles. So, these fears are not of the gripping type - I don't dwell on them either - but, I have to at least acknowledge that they exist in my life.

Have a blessed weekend dear friends!

List #8

Happy Friday friends!

This being Friday, it's time for another one of Leah's Lists. Can I just remind you all of how much I love to make lists? I know...I know...unless you're a listmaker like me, you won't understand. Just play along anyway...k?

Back in January, I undertook a challenge put forth by my favorite Bible teacher, Beth Moore, to commit to memorize 2 scriptures a month. I actually blogged about this back then, so if you'd like to read more about it...here you go:

http://panthersandpetals4him.blogspot.com/2009/01/scripture-memorization.html
(FYI: this was supposed to be a direct hyperlink, but I can't get it to work right now. So, just copy and past this link into another window. Sorry about that.)

So, for today's list, I thought I would share with you 10 of the 16 I have memorized so far. Why not all 16? Thought you'd never ask. Actually, all of my lists up to this point have consisted of 10 items. I can't seem to break that tradition just yet. So, for now, I will plan to give you the next 10 at the end of October.

God has been so very, very good to me through this habit creation! I've memorized scripture before (Psalms especially), but this time around it's been so different. He has absolutely honored my obedience with this! Without fail, He's given me an opportunity to directly use that scripture in my life or someone else's right after I've memorized it! His word is very powerful, living and active folks! I not only encourage you to hide His word in your heart through memorization, but I plead with you to do so. It will be life changing if you stick with it!

Be blessed today!

Ten scripture passages memorized in 2009:

1. 2 Samuel 22:31 (NIV)
2. Habakkuk 3:17-18 (NIV)
3. 1 Corinthians 10:13 (NIV)
4. Isaiah 26: 3-4 (NLT)
5. Philippians 4:6-7 (NIV)
6. 1 Peter 3:9 (NIV)
7. Isaiah 43:18-19 (NIV)
8. Isaiah 61:1-4 (NIV)
9. James 1:27 (NIV)
10. Psalm 34:18 (NIV)

List #3

It's Friday List Day! This week, I simply wanted to focus on fun memories. As I began creating a list, I quickly realized that there are too many to narrow down, but I loved the reminiscing. How about you? Have any favorite memories that stick out in your mind? These are by no means my best or favorite fun memories - just a selection of 10 from my 37 years, in completely random order.

Fun memories:
1. Giving birth (yes it was fun - to a point)
2. Walking across the Niagra Falls bridge with my mom in what seemed like hurricane strength winds, all-the-while we laughed our heads off
3. Ice skating with my husband in Gatlinburg - got a little ahead of him - heard a big "thud" - then the crowd went "ooohhh". Yep - my hubby belly flopped on the ice. Ouch!
4. Snorkeling during a tropical storm (I guess I have a twisted sense of humor.)
5. Getting to meet the author of The Shack
6. My wedding last August - Happy Almost 1st Anniversary Chris!
7. Scrapbooking with my girlfriends at Scrap Camp
8. Touring Laura Ingalls Wilder homesites with my little princess…it was a 2500 mile mommy/daughter plane & car trip that has to be one of my most fun memories ever!
9. Driving around Beverly Hills, CA looking for the stars…only got to see Dinah Shore standing in her driveway in her bathrobe (yes, I realize some of you are too young to know Dinah Shore)
10. Having dinner with Chip Ingram at The Cove

List #2

If you're new to this blog or just haven't been reading along recently - you may want to see my blog from last Friday, July 5 entitled "List #1" to know what this is all about.

Yesterday's post may almost seem like a contrast to the list that I'm about to display. However, keep in mind that goal setting and planning is still very, very important. Allow it to guide your days, but don't allow it to take over and end up crippling you to the point of never getting anything checked off the list.

With that said, let's move on this week to List #2...

Things I hope to accomplishment within the next 24 months:

1. Become a certified scuba diver
2. Begin an herb garden
3. Learn to sew
4. Attend SheSpeaks
5. Get to my goal weight
6. Attend a photography class
7. Attend a Women of Faith conference
8. Build up my running program again so that I can run a 5K pain free
9. Finish organizing all of my pictures
10. See my new nephew - in person!

Can't wait to come back in 2 years and see how many of these I've been able to mark off! Be blessed today my friends!

List #1

Allow me to give you another glimpse into my personality: I am a perfectionist (I think I've confessed that before), lover of organization, obsessive-compulsive in nature, and driven. Wrap all that up into a bundle and you have a woman that loves to make lists! Yep - that's me! I make lists for everything. I think I enjoy making lists, because I love structure and order to things. That's one of God's attributes that I can totally relate to - His orderliness! I also like those lists in which I can scratch items off, because it shows accomplishment. With that said, I'm thinking of starting a weekly blog list. If you are a listmaker too, I invite you to share your list with me. If not, just humor me a bit here through my quirkiness. Be blessed my friends!

My favorite books of the Bible (in no particular order - other than the top 2):

1. James (favorite NT book)
2. Ruth (favorite OT book)
3. John
4. Esther
5. Isaiah
6. Psalms
7. Proverbs
8. Job
9. Philippians
10. Hebrews
